T he history of the Miniature American Shepherd begins under the California sun in the late 1960s. Passionate breeders noticed that some Australian Shepherd litters naturally produced puppies smaller than the standard, yet without any loss of character or ability.
The idea quickly took root: to establish these compact dogs as a distinct breed, capable of working livestock as well as thriving in a family setting.
The selection process was patient and methodical. Generation after generation, breeders retained the best breeding stock that met the desired size, while preserving the legendary intelligence, loyalty, and herding instinct of the Aussie.
Over successive litters, a new breed emerged, distinct from its ancestor: smaller in stature, yet possessing the same fundamental qualities. Backcrosses to the Australian Shepherd were gradually discontinued to solidify the characteristics unique to this new line.
In 1980, the American Stock Dog Registry officially registered the breed under the name Miniature Australian Shepherd. Thirty years later, in 2011, the American Kennel Club (AKC) admitted the breed into its Foundation Stock Service before granting full recognition in 2015 within the Herding Group, alongside its ancestor the Australian Shepherd.
In France, the Société Centrale Canine actually preceded the United States by officially recognizing the breed in 2014.
International recognition came in 2019, when the FCI granted provisional recognition to the breed, paving the way for worldwide distribution.
Today, the Miniature American Shepherd appeals equally to professional breeders and families seeking a versatile, athletic, and affectionate companion—a success that validates the selection program begun more than fifty years ago.

Its silhouette immediately recalls its illustrious cousin: a medium-length double coat, straight to slightly wavy, appearing in black, red, or merle, sometimes enhanced with white or tan markings.
Its head with a moderate yet defined stop carries triangular semi-erect ears that tip forward the moment it springs into action — an expressive detail that reveals its constant alertness.
The eyes, often of different colors in merle specimens, add to its unique charm.
Its height ranges from 33 to 46 cm at the withers with a weight between 9 and 14 kg: small enough to travel easily, yet sturdy enough to work hard.
