History & Origin

T he history of the Old English Bulldog traces its roots to 16th century England, when these robust and courageous dogs were used for bull-baiting, a brutal sport pitting dogs against bulls. These ancestral bulldogs, stocky yet leggy, possessed a powerful jaw and legendary tenacity.

The prohibition of these fights in 1835 marked a dramatic turning point. The English Bulldog evolved into an increasingly typey show dog, progressively developing serious health problems: respiratory difficulties, fragile joints, and the necessity for assisted reproduction. The breed was losing its original athleticism in favor of an extreme appearance.

In the 1970s, American breeder David Leavitt of Pennsylvania undertook an ambitious project: to recreate the healthy, functional working bulldog of the early 19th century. Using a scientific selection method developed by Ohio State University for cattle, he methodically crossed modern English Bulldog (50%), American Bulldog, Bullmastiff, and Pit Bull (in equal proportions). After eight to nine generations of rigorous selection, the female Polly became the foundation of the breed, living to 18 years of age in excellent health.

Today, the Old English Bulldog enjoys official recognition by the United Kennel Club since 2014. Although not recognized by the FCI, it is gaining popularity thanks to its robust health, preserved athletic abilities, and affectionate temperament. This breed exemplifies a responsible approach aimed at restoring a historic canine heritage while prioritizing animal welfare.

Recognized by the United Kennel Club since 2014, our FBKC club officially recognizes this recreated breed, offering a modern alternative to traditional organizations that have yet to accept it, thus enabling responsible breeders to showcase this exemplary work of canine restoration.

Health & Common Conditions

General Health

The Old English Bulldog benefits from a markedly superior overall hardiness compared to the modern English Bulldog, the result of selective breeding aimed at restoring the functional health of the ancestral breed. Its moderately short muzzle allows for comfortable breathing, considerably improving its tolerance for physical exertion.

Its athletic build promotes good mobility and an appreciable life expectancy, often exceeding 11 years. With a balanced diet and appropriate regular exercise, it easily maintains optimal physical condition. However, caution should be exercised regarding extreme temperatures, which it tolerates poorly.

Annual veterinary check-ups allow for monitoring of joints and overall health, thus ensuring longevity in peak condition through attentive preventive care.

Common Conditions

Although significantly healthier than its modern cousin, the Old English Bulldog may show a predisposition to hip dysplasia, manifesting as lameness or difficulty rising. Radiographic screening of breeding stock and monitoring jumping during growth prove beneficial.

Some individuals develop skin allergies or infections in the skin folds, requiring regular hygiene. Dermatitis and eye infections remain occasional but warrant attention.

Rigorous selection of breeding stock with appropriate genetic testing and preventive veterinary care contribute greatly to maintaining this breed in excellent overall health, demonstrating the success of its responsible recreation.

Care & Living Environment

Daily Care

The Old English Bulldog's grooming requirements are remarkably simple thanks to its short, close-lying, and glossy coat. Weekly brushing with a pin brush is sufficient to remove dead hair and maintain coat sheen, with increased attention during seasonal shedding periods.

The skin folds around the neck require regular cleaning with a clean, dry cloth to prevent bacterial infections. The ears deserve weekly inspection, while the nails require monthly trimming.

One or two baths per year with a mild shampoo complete the routine. Dental hygiene, with twice-weekly brushing, effectively prevents tartar buildup. The eyes also require regular cleaning to avoid irritation.

Recommended Living Environment

L'Old English Bulldog adapts perfectly to apartment living as well as house living with a yard, provided that its exercise needs are met. A secure outdoor space is an appreciated bonus. Sensitive to extreme temperatures, it must live indoors, protected from heat waves and severe cold.

Recommended Activities

Daily walks of moderate intensity constitute his favorite activity, complemented by play sessions in a secure area. He enjoys tracking games, canine freestyle, and adapted obstacle courses. Chewing exercises and puzzle games stimulate his mind, while family activities enhance his overall well-being.
