T he history of the Cavapoo begins in the 1990s in Australia, the birthplace of many modern hybrid breeds. Visionary breeders conceived the idea of crossing the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the Miniature or Toy Poodle to create a companion dog suited to contemporary lifestyles.
Some sources mention crossbreeding attempts as early as the 1950s, but the breed truly took shape at the end of the twentieth century.
The primary objective was to combine three sought-after qualities: a small size suited to modern living, a pleasant and affectionate temperament, and most importantly, a hypoallergenic coat with minimal shedding.
The Poodle, renowned for its non-allergenic coat and exceptional intelligence ranked second worldwide, contributed these technical characteristics. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a family favorite for its legendary gentleness and sociable nature, ensured a balanced temperament.
Breeders also sought to improve the genetic health of their lines. The Cavalier, though beautiful, suffers from significant cardiac predispositions due to a restricted gene pool following World War II.
The Miniature Poodle, considered one of the most robust breeds with a lifespan often exceeding 16 years, allowed for the introduction of beneficial hybrid vigor.
The Cavapoo's popularity exploded rapidly in Australia before conquering the United Kingdom and North America. Social media amplified this fame, with many Cavapoos becoming true Instagram stars thanks to their irresistible appearance.
Today, the Cavapoo is not recognized by the FCI, the AKC, or the LOF, as these organizations only validate established "purebred" breeds. Nevertheless, its worldwide popularity continues to grow among families seeking an affectionate, intelligent companion adaptable to all lifestyles.

Description
W ith the appearance of a living plush toy and a round face featuring large, endearing eyes, the Cavapoo embodies the quintessential modern companion dog!
This hybrid breed harmoniously combines the elegance of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the intelligent vivacity of the Poodle. Weighing between 5 and 10 kg and standing 28 to 45 cm tall depending on the variety, this small dog displays a compact, well-proportioned silhouette.
Its round face features medium-sized dark eyes that sparkle with mischief. The short, slightly flattened muzzle is reminiscent of the Cavalier, while the long, pendant ears adorned with silky hair frame its adorable head. Its compact body conceals firm musculature beneath a coat that serves as its true hallmark.
The Cavapoo's coat represents one of its major assets: wavy or curly, short to medium in length, dense, and remarkably soft to the touch.
This coat may inherit more of the Poodle's hypoallergenic qualities with minimal shedding, or the Cavalier's silky coat with slightly more noticeable shedding.
Colors come in a rich palette: cream, fawn, chocolate, gold, white, black, bicolor such as brown and white, or even tricolor with white, black, and fawn.
In terms of temperament, this small companion brims with joie de vivre and affection. Intelligent like the Poodle and gentle like the Cavalier, it displays a natural sociability toward the entire family.
Playful without being hyperactive, affectionate without being intrusive, it adapts remarkably to its owners' lifestyle. Its deep attachment to its family makes it a devoted shadow that distinctly prefers human companionship to solitude.
Personality
T he Cavapoo embodies gentleness and affection in their purest form. This small dog overflows with joy and positive energy, loving to spend time with their family in all daily activities.
Their intelligence inherited from the Poodle makes them curious and playful, while the gentle nature of the Cavalier gives them a constant desire to please their owners.
Sociable and friendly, they form harmonious bonds with children and generally get along well with other animals. Their natural alertness makes them a good watchdog, sounding the alarm at suspicious approaches without being aggressive. However, their Achilles' heel remains solitude: this companion truly cannot tolerate long absences.
They require daily human presence to fully thrive. Their well-balanced temperament harmoniously combines liveliness and calmness, activity and cuddles.

Training Tips
Training begins at 8 weeks of age with fundamental basics. This clever little dog responds admirably to positive reinforcement with treats and praise. His intelligence facilitates rapid learning, although he may sometimes be slow to grasp certain commands. Short, engaging training sessions maintain his attention. Early socialization with various people, animals, and environments shapes a confident, well-adjusted adult.
Health & Common Conditions
General Health
The Cavapoo generally enjoys robust health thanks to hybrid vigor, a genetic phenomenon that dilutes certain predispositions affecting purebred dogs. Its life expectancy ranges between 12 and 15 years, reflecting its sound constitution.
Crossbreeding with the Miniature Poodle, one of the longest-lived breeds often exceeding 16 years, considerably enhances its vitality.
Its natural love of food does require weight monitoring, however, as excess weight can lead to joint and cardiac complications. Quality nutrition formulated for small breeds and controlled portions help prevent obesity.
Regular veterinary checkups enable early detection of potential health concerns. Selecting a responsible breeder who tests breeding stock for hereditary conditions significantly minimizes health risks and ensures a companion in peak condition.
Common Conditions
Inherited mitral valve disease in the Cavalier is the primary cardiac concern, with all Cavaliers developing this condition by around 10 years of age. Annual cardiac screening detects heart murmurs early. Syringomyelia, a painful neurological condition affecting the Cavalier, can also be inherited.
Patellar luxation causes intermittent lameness and reluctance to climb stairs. Eye problems include progressive retinal atrophy, and hip dysplasia occurs in certain lines. Dental issues frequently affect this breed due to the small jaw inherited from both parents.
The drop ears require monitoring for ear infections. Fortunately, hybridization with the Poodle, an exceptionally healthy breed, significantly reduces the incidence of these conditions compared to the purebred Cavalier.
Care & Living Environment
Daily Care
Coat maintenance is the most demanding aspect of Cavapoo ownership. Their wavy or curly coat requires weekly brushing at minimum, ideally two to three times per week, to prevent the formation of mats and tangles. The coat tangles relatively easily, particularly behind the ears and under the legs.
Professional grooming every 2 to 3 months maintains a practical length and a well-kept appearance. Monthly baths with gentle shampoo preserve coat quality. The drop ears require weekly cleaning to prevent infections. Nail trimming should be performed every 3 to 4 weeks.
Dental brushing several times per week protects against tartar buildup, a common issue in small breeds. The eyes benefit from gentle daily wiping to remove any discharge.
Recommended Living Environment
The Cavapoo adapts perfectly to all types of living environments: urban apartments, homes with yards, or quiet country settings. Its moderate exercise requirements suit smaller spaces well.
This breed appreciates indoor comfort and tolerates cold weather better than excessive heat. The key to its happiness lies in consistent human companionship rather than available space. Ideal for families who can devote ample time and attention.
Recommended Activities
Scent work activities engage the dog's intelligence. Recreational agility channels energy while developing physical capabilities. Interactive games and puzzle toys keep the alert mind occupied during inclement weather.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Cavapoo sheds significantly less than most breeds thanks to its Poodle heritage. Its curly coat retains dander and dead hair, significantly reducing allergens in the environment. However, no dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic. Individuals with mild to moderate allergies generally tolerate this breed well. The degree of hypoallergenicity varies depending on whether the puppy inherits more of the Poodle or Cavalier coat type. An exposure test prior to adoption is recommended.
The Cavapoo comes in two sizes depending on the type of Poodle used in the cross. The Miniature Cavapoo results from crossing with a Miniature Poodle and stands 33 to 45 cm at the withers, weighing 7 to 10 kg. It is well-suited for families seeking a slightly more robust dog. The Toy Cavapoo comes from a cross with a Toy Poodle and remains smaller, measuring 28 to 35 cm and weighing 5 to 7 kg. This miniature version is particularly appealing to apartment dwellers.
No, the Cavapoo generally proves easy to train thanks to the intelligence inherited from the Poodle, ranked the second most intelligent breed in the world. The eager-to-please temperament inherited from the Cavalier further facilitates learning basic commands and housebreaking. However, some individuals may be slower to learn depending on the dominant parent. Positive reinforcement with treats produces excellent results. Short, engaging training sessions maintain their attention. Their sensitivity requires gentleness and patience rather than excessive firmness.
The Cavapoo requires brushing two to three times per week to prevent mat formation in its curly coat. The hair tangles easily, particularly behind the ears, under the legs, and on the belly area. Daily brushing remains ideal for maintaining an impeccable coat. Professional grooming every 2 to 3 months allows for trimming the coat to a practical length and maintaining a well-groomed appearance. Monthly baths with mild shampoo preserve coat quality. This grooming routine ensures an always elegant dog.
The Cavapoo tolerates prolonged solitude very poorly. This companion dog develops an intense attachment to its family and genuinely suffers when left alone for more than 4 to 5 hours. Repeated separations lead to separation anxiety, excessive barking, and destructive behaviors. This companion requires near-constant human presence to thrive. If your schedule keeps you away all day, this breed will not suit your lifestyle. Families with remote workers or retirees provide the ideal environment for this affectionate and dependent little dog.

About this crossbreed
The Cavapoo is the result of a planned cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Toy or Miniature Poodle, first developed in Australia in the 1990s.
Breeders sought three primary qualities: a compact size suited to modern living, a gentle and affectionate temperament, and most importantly, a low-shedding hypoallergenic coat suitable for allergy sufferers.
From the Cavalier, the hybrid inherits its gentle nature, sociable character, and deep devotion to family. From the Poodle comes remarkable intelligence, ranked second worldwide a low-allergen curly coat, and exceptional genetic robustness. The Miniature Poodle lives on average over 16 years and ranks among the healthiest breeds, offsetting the Cavalier's cardiac predispositions.
Each Cavapoo presents a unique combination of parental traits. Some lean more toward the Cavalier's calm disposition while others exhibit the Poodle's energy.
This variability is part of the hybrid's charm but makes each puppy unpredictable. The Cavapoo is not recognized by the FCI, as these organizations only accept established purebreds.
Most Cavapoos are first-generation crosses between two purebreds rather than hybrids bred to each other, which maintains hybrid vigor but limits genetic stability from generation to generation.
Our club exists to establish the breeders' work, particularly through clear and rigorous pedigree documentation, in order to produce the finest specimens
