Create my accountHistory & Origin
T he history of the Pomchi is part of the designer breed movement that gained momentum in the United States at the turn of the 1990s and 2000s. This era marked American breeders' enthusiasm for creating new companions by combining the qualities of recognized breeds, with the ambition of developing the ideal small companion dog. The Pomchi was thus born from the union of two prestigious lineages with opposite geographical origins.
The Pomeranian, or Dwarf Spitz, has its roots in Germany and Pomerania, a distant descendant of Arctic sled dogs miniaturized over the centuries by European aristocracy.
Queen Victoria herself helped popularize this fluffy ball of fur in the 19th century. The Chihuahua, for its part, takes its name from the Mexican state where it was discovered, likely descended from the Techichi, a sacred dog of Aztec civilizations, and is considered the smallest canine breed in the world.
American breeders sought to combine the mischievous energy of the Chihuahua with the sociable nature of the Pomeranian, while softening certain pronounced traits of each breed. The Pomchi's popularity quickly spread to Canada and then to Europe, particularly in France where this hybrid breed increasingly appeals to enthusiasts of unique small dogs.
Unlike traditional breeds, the Pomchi has no ancient history or fixed standard, with each litter offering physical and temperamental variations that make up its unpredictable charm.
Not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, it remains a recent creation that continues to evolve according to breeding selections, promising each puppy a unique combination of the best qualities from its illustrious parents.
Our FBKC club offers you the opportunity to register your Pomchi with a modern and flexible approach. We recognize this hybrid breed and allow professionals to register them to obtain a four-generation pedigree, while giving breeders greater freedom and responsibility in selecting their breeding stock through our online kennel management tools.

Training Tips
Training the Pomchi is best started as soon as he arrives home, ideally around 8 weeks of age. Positive reinforcement proves particularly effective with this intelligent yet sometimes stubborn breed, as rewards and encouragement stimulate his natural motivation. Early socialization with various people, animals, and environments helps reduce his natural wariness toward strangers and prevents fearful or overly protective behaviors in adulthood.
Health & Common Conditions
General Health
The Pomchi generally benefits from a robust constitution inherited from hybrid vigor, with its crossbreeding reducing certain genetic issues inherent to purebred lines. Its remarkable life expectancy, reaching up to 18 years, reflects its overall good health when provided with proper care.
Its small size naturally protects it from certain conditions affecting large dogs, such as severe joint problems. However, its physical fragility requires particular care during handling and play.
A balanced diet suited to small breeds, combined with moderate daily exercise, helps maintain its ideal body condition.
Biannual veterinary visits allow for early detection of potential concerns. Special attention to dental hygiene and joint health promotes long-term well-being, ensuring many years of companionship with this spirited little dog.
Common Conditions
The Pomchi may exhibit a predisposition to certain conditions inherited from its parent breeds. Patellar luxation ranks among the primary concerns, sometimes causing intermittent lameness that requires regular orthopedic monitoring.
Dental problems also represent a frequent challenge in this toy breed, as the small size of its jaw promotes tartar buildup and gingival disease. Tracheal collapse, a weakness of the trachea that can cause a characteristic cough, necessitates the use of a harness rather than a standard collar.
Hypoglycemia may occur in the smallest individuals, particularly in puppies. Ocular conditions such as cataracts or progressive retinal atrophy warrant ophthalmologic monitoring.
Fortunately, early screening and appropriate preventive care allow for effective management of these conditions, providing the Pomchi with a long and comfortable life with its family.
Care & Living Environment
Daily Care
Pomchi grooming varies depending on the inherited coat type, but generally requires regular attention. Brushing several times a week keeps the coat free of tangles and redistributes natural oils, particularly in long-coated individuals.
Visits to a professional groomer every two to three months ensure a neat, well-maintained trim.
Dental hygiene requires daily brushing or at minimum three times weekly to prevent tartar buildup, a common concern in small breeds. Nails require monthly trimming if they do not wear down naturally during walks.
Weekly ear cleaning with an appropriate solution prevents infections, while the expressive eyes benefit from gentle daily wiping to remove discharge. Monthly baths with a hypoallergenic shampoo preserve the health of the sensitive skin while maintaining a silky, lustrous coat.
Recommended Living Environment
About this crossbreed
Le Pomchi résulte d'un croisement intentionnel entre le Pomeranian et le Chihuahua, deux races miniatures parmi les plus appréciées au monde.
American breeders initiated this program in the 1990s with the specific goal of creating a companion that combines the sociable nature and luxurious coat of the Pomeranian with the bold temperament and hardiness of the Chihuahua.
This crossbreeding also aims to moderate certain pronounced traits of each parent breed, such as the overly short muzzle of the Pomeranian or the excessive fragility of the Chihuahua.
The result offers considerable genetic variability from one individual to another, with each puppy expressing its parents' characteristics differently. This genetic diversity has the advantage of reducing certain health issues associated with purebred inbreeding.
Although not recognized by traditional kennel organizations such as the FCI, our FBKC club officially recognizes this hybrid breed and permits its registration with a four-generation pedigree, thereby providing legitimacy to dedicated breeders who perpetuate this endearing cross with commitment and responsibility.
