T he history of the Alaskan Klee Kai began in the early 1970s in the town of Wasilla, Alaska, through the efforts of a dedicated breeder named Linda Spurlin. During a trip to Oklahoma, she discovered a small female Alaskan Husky named "Curious," whose miniature size immediately captivated her. Upon returning to the Far North, she embarked on an ambitious project: to create a small-sized Nordic companion dog without resorting to dwarfism.
Over nearly two decades of careful selective breeding, Linda Spurlin methodically crossed Alaskan and Siberian Huskies with American Eskimo Dogs and Schipperkes. These carefully orchestrated crosses aimed to reduce size while preserving the appearance and temperament of Nordic breeds. In 1988, after years of private breeding, she decided to make her creation available to the public.
The chosen name, "Klee Kai," comes from the Athabascan dialect and literally means "small dog," paying tribute to Alaska's Native American roots. In 1995, the breed was renamed "Alaskan Klee Kai" to anchor its geographic origin. Official recognition came on January 1, 1997, from the United Kennel Club (UKC), marking an important milestone for this emerging breed.
Today, the Alaskan Klee Kai remains extremely rare, with fewer than 1,000 individuals registered worldwide. Its dense double coat comes in three magnificent color combinations: black and white, gray and white, or red and white. The most characteristic feature is undoubtedly its symmetrical facial mask with contrasting colors, framing almond-shaped eyes that may be blue, brown, or even bi-colored. Its erect triangular ears and bushy tail curled over the back complete this harmonious and athletic silhouette.
