T he history of the Pomklee is part of the contemporary movement of miniature Nordic-type hybrid breeds, a movement particularly developed in the United States over recent decades.

This recent creation responds to a growing demand from Nordic dog enthusiasts seeking to combine the majestic appearance of the Husky with a size better suited to modern urban living and smaller spaces.

To understand the Pomklee, one must first look back at the origins of its parent breeds. The Alaskan Klee Kai was developed in the 1970s in Alaska by breeder Linda Spurlin, who dreamed of creating a miniature companion dog possessing the appearance and temperament of the Husky.

She methodically crossed Siberian and Alaskan Huskies with American Eskimo Dogs and Schipperkes, ultimately producing an authentic miniature Husky recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1997.

The Pomeranian, for its part, descends from the sled dogs of Pomerania, miniaturized over the centuries by European aristocracy. This Toy Spitz contributes to the Pomklee its natural sociability, luxurious coat, and playful character.

American breeders initiated the Pomklee cross with the goal of stabilizing the size of miniature Nordic hybrids while softening the sometimes aloof temperament of the Klee Kai.

The desired objective was to produce puppies uniform in size, approximately 15 inches tall and 15 to 18 pounds at maturity, thus avoiding the significant variations observed in direct Husky-Pomeranian crosses. The Klee Kai contributes its pronounced mask and typical Husky appearance, while the Pomeranian or Pomsky passes on a family-oriented and affectionate character, tempering the sometimes marked independence of the Klee Kai.

This genetic combination aims to create true typey miniature Huskies with excellent companion temperament. Although not recognized by traditional kennel club organizations, the Pomklee is steadily gaining in popularity, particularly in America where it appeals to Nordic dog enthusiasts seeking a more manageable size.

Description

A true miniature wolf in appearance, the Pomklee embodies the union of two breeds, two canine worlds that are closely related yet diametrically opposed. This rare hybrid dog, born from the cross between the Alaskan Klee Kai and the Pomeranian, displays a silhouette that immediately evokes Nordic breeds while maintaining a size well-suited to modern living.

Its miniature husky appearance captivates all who encounter it, capturing the wild essence of Arctic breeds in an accessible package.

Standing approximately 15 inches at the withers and weighing between 15 and 18 pounds, the Pomklee presents a well-balanced and compact structure. Its characteristic facial mask, a pronounced inheritance from the Klee Kai, features symmetrical markings around its expressive eyes, which may be blue, brown, or even bi-eyed.

Its erect, triangular ears alertly capture every sound, while its well-plumed tail curls gracefully over its back.

The Pomklee's coat is distinguished by its dense, woolly texture, more reminiscent of the Husky's thick fur than the fluffy, cottony coat typical of the Spitz.

This double coat provides natural protection against the elements, typically displaying bicolor patterns combining white with black, gray, or red. The physical structure reveals a body slightly longer than tall, with solid bone and well-defined musculature despite its modest size.

In terms of temperament, the Pomklee achieves a balanced blend between the independent nature of the Klee Kai and the sociable disposition of the Pomeranian.
