History & Origin

T he history of the Exotic Schnauzer is rooted in one of Europe's most well-established companion breeds: the German Miniature Schnauzer. This small dog, whose origins date back to 15th-century Bavaria, was prized for its abilities as a watchdog and vermin hunter on farms.

It is from this solid genetic and morphological foundation that the ambition for the Exotic Schnauzer emerged, through both methodical and passionate selective breeding.

The development project for this variety was born from a clear objective: to expand the aesthetic possibilities of the breed without altering its identity.

Dedicated breeders undertook the introduction of new coat colors including chocolate, liver, merle, parti-color, tricolor, and many others, as well as different coat textures, from the traditional wiry coat to the voluminous fluffy coat.

Each breeding selection was guided by an unwavering standard: to maintain a recognizable Schnauzer type, sound structure, and stable temperament.

Today, the Exotic Schnauzer stands as a structured experimental variety, with a comprehensive breed standard governing both conformation and color genetics.

Merle-to-merle breeding is strictly prohibited, and hip and elbow radiographs are mandatory for all breeding stock.

Common Conditions

Like all dogs descended from the Miniature Schnauzer, the Exotic Schnauzer may present some predispositions that warrant monitoring.

Pancreatitis ranks among the primary concerns: a low-fat diet and smaller, more frequent meals constitute the best prevention.

Urinary stones (urolithiasis) also merit regular attention, with adequate daily water intake. Comedone syndrome, a hereditary skin condition, may manifest as blackheads along the back.

For individuals carrying the merle gene, hearing and ophthalmologic screening is recommended.

The good news: most of these conditions can be detected early and managed effectively with appropriate veterinary care.

Care & Living Environment

Daily Care

Grooming requirements for the Exotic Schnauzer vary depending on coat type, but all varieties require regular attention.

A complete grooming session every 6 to 8 weeks is recommended, including trimming of the characteristic beard and eyebrows.

Nails, ears, and teeth should be checked weekly. Regular ear cleaning helps prevent infections, and routine dental care contributes to long-term oral health.
